KYC / AML Verifications — Overview

What the AUSTRAC CDD and TPB proof of identity checks collect, which one you need and how to collect bank details.

Admiin runs two identity checks on your clients: AUSTRAC customer due diligence (CDD) and TPB proof of identity (POI). Both confirm who your client is. Neither collects tax file numbers or bank details.

Which check you need

  • AUSTRAC CDD is for firms regulated under the AML/CTF Act.

  • TPB POI is for registered tax agents, who must confirm a client's identity before providing tax services.

An AUSTRAC CDD check generally also meets your TPB proof of identity requirement, so you don't need to run both. Confirm this against your own compliance program.

What each check collects

TPB POI asks your client for:

  • their full name, date of birth and residential address

  • an ID document, such as an Australian driver licence or passport.

AUSTRAC CDD asks for the same, then also:

  • matches their details against independent data sources

  • screens them for politically exposed person (PEP) and sanctions status

  • for a company, trust or partnership, confirms the business and verifies its directors and beneficial owners.

Each person verifies their own identity through a secure link.

What the checks don't collect

  • Tax file numbers.

  • Bank account details.

Collect bank details with a check

Use a self-onboarding invite to collect bank details and start a check in one step.

  1. Go to Clients. Select the arrow next to New client, then Invite client to self-onboard.

  2. Enter the client's details.

  3. Under Details to collect, tick Bank account name, Bank account BSB and Bank account number.

  4. Turn on Trigger verification on submit.

  5. Select Send invite.

Bank details appear when you review the submission. They aren't saved on the client record, so copy them into your practice software at that point.

Verification statuses

A Verify button means no check has started. The most common statuses are:

  • In Progress: the check has started.

  • Verification Sent: a link has gone to a person who needs to verify.

  • UBO Review: the business's beneficial owners are being reviewed.

  • Passed: the check passed.

  • Failed: the check didn't pass. Open it to see why.
